Via BoingBoing, we have this great video of self-referential Disney animation:

The BB thread offers some theories on why these designs might have repeated over time, ranging from the technical to the cultural. Any ideas?

Well this makes sense.
First of all, Disney was (and still is) all about business-efficiency to its core. Once, they made a hit movie - why not recycle it?
Secondly, they shot live action footage for rotoscoping references - so it's understandable that even the FRAMING is exactly matched up b/c it's matched up to the live action framing.
Nowadays, computer import/exporting makes this process easier and more subtle. Pixar (and probably most companies) reuse their material as well, whether deliberately (for easter eggs) or otherwise.
