2004 Year in Review
December 29, 2004 | In the world of entertainment and cultural media, the end of the year is a time for lists. Magazines, organizations, and television shows tell us what were, in their estimations, the best (and sometimes the worst) that the year had to offer in movies, television, books, music, fashion, and even words.

As anyone will tell you, these lists are inherently subjective, which is why some of their authors save themselves the headache and don't even bother to rank them. So when we turned to our own contributors to ask about this year's crop of animation, we decided to take it a step further. We asked a simple question—What were the most interesting animated productions you saw this year?—only we left it up to them to define "interesting." Their reasons were as varied as their selections, and we trust you'll be as surprised by some of them as we were.
